It is rare for Columbine to throw the football five times in an entire game. The Rebels usually rely on a potent running attack. But on Friday night against Thomas Jefferson, Columbine head coach Andy Lowry gave Danny Spond a chance to air it out. And Spond did not disappoint. The CU commitment threw five touchdown passes, helping Columbine to a 42-0 halftime lead. With the starters on the sideline in the second half, the Rebels' backups preserved the shutout. The final score read: Columbine 48, Thomas Jefferson 0. "The game is fun when everything is clicking like that," said Spond, who stands 6-foot-3, 215-pounds. "We even got to practice our two-minute drill at the end of the first half and that worked. We went 60 yards and scored. It was great." Columbine is the second ranked 5A team in Colorado and ranked 62nd nationally, according to Rivals.com. They survived a scare in their season opener against Heritage, but won, 20-13. "I think we came into the Heritage game a little over [confident]," said Spond. "We kind of overlooked them a little bit but you can't do that to any team. So we came back this week and really buckled down. We realized that we needed to execute a lot better." Spond intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble on defense against Heritage. "One of our starting safeties was hurt for that first game so I stepped in and played every snap on defense," he explained. "This past game I just played one series on defense." Spond became CU's first commitment for the Class of 2010 back in April. He said on Saturday that he remains solidly committed to the Buffaloes despite their rough start this season. "Even though they are struggling, it is still the same environment up there. That is something that I really want to be around," Spond said. "I went to the CU-CSU game and had a great time during the pre-game. My family, and I think everyone is general, expected them to do better but teams have ups and downs. I think they just need to come together as a team, have fun and things will start to click." Spond is hoping to make it up to Boulder to watch the Buffs' game against Wyoming next Saturday.
